Community Leaders Tout Prop 47 As Key Step in Prison Reform

As the November 4th election date nears, no legislation has drawn more input from the black community than Proposition 47, also called the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act. The law would allow criminals with smaller charges, like petty theft, shoplifting, and writing bad checks, to appeal their sentence. In return, the state would use the money saved to reinvest in Los Angeles schools.
Leaders from across Los Angeles—from LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to City Councilmember Curren D. Price, Jr. —gathered in support of the act at First AME Church, all hoping to convince the crowd that, if there were ever a time in which they needed their vote, it was now.

Saving Grace: Sharon Leal

I only had one dream, and that was to be on Broadway,” says actress Sharon Leal. “I really didn’t think beyond just getting to the Broadway stage.”
But the career-making role she ultimately did land in Broadway’s Miss Saigon which bowed in the early 90's, was just the beginning for the Tucson, Arizona native, who has gone on to starring roles in such box office hits as “Dreamgirls,” “This Christmas,” Soul Men, and Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” and its highly successful sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, which grossed over $60 million at the domestic box office. Her independent film credits include “Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day” opposite Blair Underwood, “Carry Me Home” opposite Academy Award Winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and William Sadler, and a smash hit at 2013’s Toronto Film Festival titled “1982.”

And unlike the others, whose ratings have been slipped in recent seasons, the Atlanta franchise is thriving with an early January 2014 episode becoming the highest-rated in “Housewives” history with a record 4.5 million viewers making for Bravo’s biggest night ever.

Black Vote Key to Midterms, Remains A Potent Force in National Elections

A story in the New York Times just last month declared that the black vote was viewed as the “last hope for Democrats to hold senate”. The story went on to cite a confidential memo from a former Obama pollster predicting crushing defeat for Democrats nationwide if the party could not get black voters in large numbers to the poll.

Fact is, they are expected to play a huge role in determining whether Democrats can stop Republicans from gaining control of the Senate, particularly given that six of the 16 states with the highest black populations have key Senate races.

Their love affair has the subject of a great deal of speculation online and in some church circles, and while very public tweets made no secret of the fact that they were indeed in love, One Church L.A. In that service, Jakes—an author, sought after speaker and the daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes—was welcomed to the stage as the church’s future first lady, with the wedding set to take place next month.
