Medical Challenges Prompt Retirement of LAUSD Superintendent Michele King

It was just a year ago that for the first time in its 163-year history, the Los Angeles Unified School District selected an African American woman—Michelle King to serve as the new superintendent. Last week, King announced that she was stepping down.

“I have had the honor of serving as the superintendent of L.A. Unified for two years, although I have been challenged by medical issues for the last several months,” King said in a statement. “During this time, I have been undergoing treatment for cancer. Now, with the progression of my illness, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to retire by June 30. Until then, I will remain on medical leave.

“I am very thankful for the outpouring of support I have received from the entire L.A. Unified family, our community partners and my colleagues across the nation, King continued. “As I aggressively fight this illness, I ask that you continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers.”

King, 55, graduated from UCLA with a biology degree and holds a master’s degree in administration from Pepperdine University. The veteran educator—who has been on medical leave since September—has worked at L.A. Unified since 1978 when she started as a student aide.

Essence Ventures LLC, an independent African-American owned company focused on merging content, community and commerce, recently announced its acquisition of multi-platform media company Essence Communications Inc. from Time Inc. While terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the sale re-establishes the nation’s leading black women’s magazine as 100% African American owned.

“This acquisition of Essence represents the beginning of an exciting transformation of our iconic brand as it evolves to serve the needs and interests of multigenerational Black women around the world in an even more elevated and comprehensive way across print, digital, e-commerce and experiential platforms,” said Essence President Michelle Ebanks, who will continue at the helm of the company and will also join its board of directors. “In addition, it represents a critical recognition, centering and elevation of the Black women running the business from solely a leadership position to a co-ownership position.”

“The strategic vision and leadership that Michelle has provided to Essence over the years have been exemplary, and we are thrilled to work with her and her talented team to provide the necessary resources and support to continue to grow the engagement and influence of the ESSENCE brand and transform this business,” said Richelieu Dennis, founder and chairperson of Essence Ventures. “As importantly, we are excited to be able to return this culturally relevant and historically significant platform to ownership by the people and the consumers whom it serves and offer new opportunities for the women leading the business to also be partners in the business.”
