Chaminade runs past Citrus Valley, advance to CIF-SS D2 semifinal

REDLANDS — Chaminade football coach David Machuca entered Friday night’s second-round CIF Southern Section Division 2 game with a plan to mix the passing game with the running game. That plan didn’t last after the first half.

The Eagles (10-2) decided they would focus on running the ball and it proved successful, earning a 38-28 victory over Citrus Valley. Chaminade will play in the next round against the winner of the Rancho Cucamonga-Inglewood game. Citrus Valley finished with a 9-3 record.

“Our ability to run the ball was the difference,” Machuca said. “We told our offensive line that the game was theirs to win.”

Citrus Valley took a 28-24 edge by driving 80 yards on 10 plays on their first drive of the third quarter. Quarterback Hunter Herrera ran for a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth minute of the third quarter. During the drive, Herrera had room to run and gained 23 yards on three carries.

For the rest of the game, Chaminade running backs J.B. Barbarin and Logan Carpenter managed to run the ball. Barbarin and Logan each had two rushing touchdowns. Of the team’s 29 second-half plays, only one was a pass.

“We knew we could get the job done by running the ball,” Barbarin said. The senior running back has made college visits to Oregon, Arizona, Oregon State, and San Jose State. He is also considering Michigan State and Washington State.

Carpenter gave the Eagle the lead for good when he ran for a 19-yard touchdown with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter. The sophomore said he has played football since he was four years old, and that was when he began dreaming of being in the Hall of Fame.

Citrus Valley had been able to move the ball through the air quite effectively in the first half. Barbarin’s two-yard touchdown run put the Eagles ahead by a 21-7 score, but 13 seconds later, Brockton Lium returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. Lium caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Herrera with 1:05 left in the second quarter, but Ryon Sayen kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Chaminade a 24-21 halftime advantage.

Citrus Valley coach Kurt Bruich was pleased with his team’s play this season.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team,” Bruich said. “We put Citrus Valley on the map as a football school.”
