NEWBURY PARK — Newbury Park football played the second half of its CIF Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinal game without the most valuable component of its offense on Friday night.

After jumping out to a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter, Panthers quarterback Brady Smigiel left the game with an apparent injury just before halftime. Newport Harbor seized the opportunity and reached a 49-28 lead with four minutes remaining in the game.

Smigiel, a freshman, had thrown to three different receivers – Shane Rosenthal, Casey Knieniem and Charlie Simmons – as the second quarter neared the 11-minute mark to put Newbury Park up 21-7.

The Sailors tied the game with rushing touchdowns from Noah McArthur and Payton Irving, then scored once more with two seconds left in the half to take a 28-21 lead at halftime.

Smigiel began the game strong, despite wearing knee brace on his right leg. But shortly after throwing an interception with five minutes left in the second quarter, Smigiel exited the game.

Rhys Kelly, a senior, took his place at the position at the start of the second half. By the fourth quarter, the Panthers were alternating between Kelly in the pocket and Charlie Simmons taking direct snaps in a wildcat formation.

The Sailors took advantage of a deflated Newbury Park team, starting when quarterback Colton Joseph connected with Josiah Lamarque for a 31-yard touchdown a minute into the third quarter.

They added two more touchdowns before time expired and Rosenthal returned a kick over 70 yards for the final Panthers touchdown.
