VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, November 18

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Leigh Chien, Santa Margarita: The Stanford commit led the Eagles to the CIF/SCGA Southern California regional title by winning the individual championship with a 5-under-par 68 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Chien is the first Santa Margarita girl to win the SoCal crown since Kellee Booth in 1992-93.

Kendall Beshear, Palos Verdes: Beshear helped Palos Verdes reach the CIF Southern California Division I regional final. She had 13 kills in a three-set win over Del Norte, 23 kills in a four-set win against Liberty and 19 kills in a five-set semifinal win against Huntington Beach on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Olivia Center, San Marino: Center was part of a dominating singles rotation that helped the Titans win their first girls CIF-SS Open Division title with an 11-7 victory over Mater Dei at The Claremont Club. It was San Marino’s 14th CIF-SS title and followed last year’s Division 1 title. Julianne Nguyen also went 3-0 in singles for the Titans and Tianmei Wang went 2-1.

Nicole Alfred, Rancho Cucamonga: Alfred won her heat at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries, finishing the course at Mt. San Antonio College in a time of 18 minutes, 30.6 seconds. She helped the Cougars finish first in the heat standings (34 points), which secured a spot in Saturday’s Division 1 championship meet. Alfred won the Baseline League individual championship this month, and she finished sixth in the Division 1/2 sweepstakes race at the Mt. SAC Invitational in October.

Mercedes Sibrian, Mayfair: Sibrian made a 21-yard field goal in the first half to put Mayfair up 3-0 against Claremont in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 football playoffs on Friday, Nov. 11. The senior added a PAT in the third quarter after the team’s only touchdown in a 12-7 win. Sibrian, who also plays soccer at Mayfair, recently signed her letter of intent with Life Pacific University’s women’s soccer team.

Jocelyn Pacheco, Granada Hills Charter: Pacheco crossed the finish line first at the City Section Division I prelims at Pierce College on Saturday, doing it in 18 minutes, 6.4 seconds in the 3-mile race. Pacheco finished 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She helped Granada Hills to a first-place finish in the team standings. The City Championship finals are Saturday at Pierce College.
