Suspect hospitalized in Pacoima after attacking officers with rocks

A man dressed only in his underwear threw rocks at Los Angeles Police Department officers and jumped onto vehicles on the 118 Freeway in Pacoima before officers detained him with less-lethal force, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call just before 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, of a man walking in the middle of Laurel Canyon Boulevard, possibly under the influence of narcotics or suffering mental illness, LAPD Officer D. Orris said.

When officers found him, he threw rocks at them, striking their patrol cars, LAPD police said.

He then ran onto the freeway and climbed onto vehicles in a possible attempt to carjack them, police said.

The California Highway Patrol stopped oncoming traffic.

The first vehicle the suspect climbed upon sped away and he fell onto the pavement, police said. He climbed onto a second vehicle and tried to break its sun roof, Orris said.

Officers deployed less-lethal devices to take the man into custody. Paramedics took him to a hospital because of injuries suffered during the incident and his apparent altered state; he was expected to be arrested upon release, police said.
