Newlyweds Kim Ervin and Bishop W. Todd Ervin were longtime members of a very traditional baptist church when they announced they were leaving to start a non-denominational church.
“My husband felt a different type of call on his life,” says Ervin, the Co-Pastor of Church One Ministries in Long Beach. “It was more to people who were ‘un-churched,’ people who didn't have church clothes and church etiquette, but were interested in going.
“There was just a strong pull to start a church, a place where people could come and feel comfortable. We are a ‘come as you are church.’ That's basically how we started. It didn't matter how you come dressed. We just wanted people to come,” she continued. “The motto of our church is we are a down to earth
church with a heaven bound ministry.”
Since then, the former Crenshaw High School teacher and mother of four has launched many ministries including their Precious Jewels Women’s Ministry and their 2B1 Marriage Ministry, which encouraged her to get a Masters.
“I even went back to school to become a Marriage and Family therapist because of my love for that.”
One of her proudest accomplishments is the work of My Girlfriend’s Closet, an outreach ministry that provides clothing, shoes and other items to women throughout the community who are working towards rebuilding their lives.
“God has grown me. I saw myself as a very quiet and shy person early on in my life and now I see myself as a bold soldier for Christ and I’m just enjoying it.
