One on One with Jamelle Monae

Grammy nominated singer Jamelle Monae parlayed her music success to the big screen last year, making her debut in the critically acclaimed independent film, “Moonlight”. But it is her portrayal of NASA’s first black female aeronautical engineer Mary Jackson in “Hidden Figures” —alongside Octavia Spencer, Kevin Costner and Taraji P. Henson—that is turning heads in Hollywood.

Q. When did you decide to make the jump to acting?

Mark Ridley-Thomas: Reflects on 25 Years of Empowerment

It’s hard to believe that Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas had no plans of being in public office given the ease with which he has traversed L.A. County’s political and civic intersections, engaging and impacting the approximately 2 million residents he has represented since he was elected supervisor of the Second District in 2008, and in the process becoming the most powerful black elected official in the Southland.

“His success is driven by his understanding of the intersection between political power and societal change,” observes Kerman Maddox, CEO of Dakota Communications, one of the city’s foremost public policy consulting firms. “You can't make real change in people's lives unless powerful institutions believe you have power. Nobody conveys real or perceived power to improve their community better than Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas and over the past twenty-five years nobody has been more effective at solving major, big picture policy issues or problems that affect real people.

Inmates Eligible for Early Release

No matter what Michael Green, a reformed gang member does for an honest day’s work, lingering legal troubles could be his toughest challenge.

The 48-year-old demolition worker, who was arrested last month for failing to pay a court fine, has little confidence in Proposition 57, a measure on the November ballot that would change criminal sentencing guidelines. In his view, it is another initiative inherently rigged against poor people and communities of color.

In the book, Chaney explains in lay terms how to surpass human limitations and release  the power of God into all areas of life.

“This desire is without question a craving for the fulfillment of a potential that often goes untapped.”

Black Churches Rally Against SB 1146 Igniting Heated Debate Over Religious Freedom

Hundreds of African-American pastors gathered for a lunch meeting with faith-based institution representatives at the University Club of Pasadena last month.

The gathering was supposed to address mounting community anxiety over a bill (SB 1146) that strips legal protections for religious colleges and universities.

It has triggered a strong reaction from the Interdenominational Action Network (IAN), a coalition of six churches representative of approximately 100,000 registered voters in Los Angeles County that include Faithful Central Bible Church (Inglewood); City of Refuge (Gardena); West Angeles COGIC (L.A.); Crenshaw Christian Center (L.A.); Holman United Methodist Church (L.A.); and Citizens of Zion M.B.C. (Compton).
