Avery’s film career began taking off with the popular “blaxploitation” films “Cool Breeze” and “Hell Up In Harlem”, but she is famously known for her role as Shug Avery in the classic film “The Color Purple”. The Mangum, Oklahoma native currently co-stars alongside Gabrielle Union and Richard Roundtree on BET's #1 Hit Drama 'Being Mary Jane' as family matriarch and Lupus victim, Helen Patterson. With a career spanning four decades, the singer/actress shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
